Group Coaching

Group coaching is a collaborative process where we, as coaches, work with a small group of PhD students. It provides a safe and supportive environment for PhD students to navigate their academic journey in a group setting. Participants will develop a solution-focused mindset, self-awareness, resilience and effective coping strategies. This helps them to stay healthy and prevents them from giving up. The peer-to-peer support can reduce feelings of isolation and inadequacy by providing compassion and motivation.

How We Work

Focused & Impactful

Online

Languages

Recognizing the valuable time of PhD students, our group coaching sessions are brief (2-3 hours/ session).

We meet for three sessions, allowing PhD students to continuously reflect on their progress and hold themselves accountable to their goals.

We aim to establish a supportive international network for PhD students, recognizing that scientific careers often span across countries.

Resource-saving: PhD students can participate from their home desks and don’t have to travel to join the programme.

We work mainly in English.

In addition, we offer tailored programs and individual coaching in German, Estonian, and Finnish.

Your Coaching Journey

The 3-month group coaching programme includes

  • 3 x 2,5h group coaching sessions.

  • Experimentation time between the sessions, allowing participants to apply their insights and learning, as well as reflect on their progress.

  • Peer group sessions. PhD-students can share experiences, offer support, and combat the sense of isolation.

  • Optional individual coaching at a special rate of 100€/hour, tailored to your specific needs.

Topics

Each group coaching programme has an overarching topic, while the specific content is designed to meet the individual needs of the participants of the respective group.

1 / Performance

The process supports participants in developing a positive, healthy and personally aligned approach to the concept of 'performance' in science, based on their individual values.  It equips PhD-students with a resilient mindset and a solid foundation that will enable them to persevere through major challenges during their PhD work and prevent them from giving up and quitting their work.

2 / Time Mastery

The process focuses on prioritising, setting goals, evaluating progress and reflecting on past successes, while exploring the mindset and resources needed to stay motivated and productive.

3 / Wellbeing and Resilience

The process focuses on the wellbeing of PhD-students and promotes resilience throughout their academic journey. It helps participants to cope with the pressures of intense workloads, navigating uncertainties, power dynamics and feelings of isolation that often contribute to overwhelming experiences and have a significant impact on PhD students' mental and physical health.

4 / Imposter Feelings and Inner Critic

Throughout their PhD journey, many students encounter a pervasive sense of inadequacy within their scientific community, harboring feelings of unworthiness and fearing the imminent exposure of their perceived lack of expertise—a phenomenon commonly known as 'imposter syndrome.' It is often fed by a very strong inner critic and a drive towards perfectionism. If this reality adjustment does not take place, young researchers have a high probability of dropping out of their doctoral journey. This group coaching aims to deal with imposter feelings, to create the awareness around it and build effective coping strategies.

5 / EmpowerHER: Elevating Women in Academia

This process addresses the unique challenges encountered by female PhD-students in academia. Covering vital topics like self-presentation, assertiveness, navigating success in male-dominated fields, handling power dynamics, and balancing work-life/family responsibilities, our goal is to unite future female leaders, fostering peer support, self-reflection, and personal growth in a nurturing environment.

Upcoming Group Coachings

Value Beyond Aims

Self-Confidence

In a positive, supportive environment, participants engage in continuous self-reflection,  get more aware of their strengths and learn how to effectively achieve their goals and succeed. And this will boost their self-confidence.

Motivation & Prioritization

Participants explore their blockers and enablers. By defining actionable steps and developing healthy habits their motivation is continuously fueled and the ,,no-deadline" paradox of a PhD-thesis is out-levered.

Community and Belonging

The meaningful peer-to-peer conversations foster valuable connections, an open exchange of ideas as well as appreciative feedback. And this builds a community that lasts beyond the programme.
